On Sunday, 2 June 2019, we hosted Nishant Pradhan (of Diet Nepal) as our guest speaker for the session. A fitness enthusiast and a nutrition expert, Mr. Pradhan gave us a lot of tips to stay fit, interacted with us, and answered all our fitness-related queries.
The importance of fitness
Mr. Pradhan started the session by elucidating the importance of fitness in our lives. “Fitness is a lifestyle choice,” he said, while telling us his story. Weighing over 120 kg in his mid-20s, he learned the hard way that staying stagnant and not indulging in activities that promote fitness is very detrimental to the body.
An exceptional basketball player in his school life, he gained weight after finishing his SLCs due to the radical shift from hostel life to day-scholar life. After facing a lot of problems, he took up fitness, and started working out.
“Patience is key”, he reminded us. He only saw results after going at it for more than 3 months, and within 8 months, had lost around 50 kilos. After completing his masters from the US, he came back to Nepal and pioneered the supplements business here.
How do we stay fit?
“You don’t have to necessarily go to the gym to stay fit,” said Mr. Pradhan. He explained that even morning walks, or eating healthy is staying fit. He also gave us a treasure trove of fitness-related information, including:
The importance of food in fitness
Fitness is 30% workout and 70% of what you eat, and not eating food does not equal to losing weight. And while fasting is fine once in a while, regular fasting has a detrimental effect on health.
There are certain diets like Keto diets and intermittent fasting which work temporarily, but affect your health in the long run. The best diet is 6-8 meals a day.
Avoiding overeating, but getting all the proper nutrients
Micronutrients like proteins, carbs and vitamins are especially important for regular office-goers. Nutrition not only affects physical health, but also mental health. Hence, it is important to eat properly, lest the quality of life degrades.
The brain gets information from the stomach only after 15 mins, so if you feel full, you have overeaten. The metabolism of any person is controllable, since eating is a habit. There are also certain tricks you can do, like drinking a few glasses of water before meals to trick your stomach into feeling full.
Busting or confirming some popular eating myths
There are a lot of myths regarding food and eating habits that are popular amongst people. Some, like the belief that eating rice makes you fat, is completely false. It is overeating that makes you fat, not carbs.
There are a few that have some amount of truth to them, like the belief that alcohol increases weight. Alcohol does not increase weight directly, but it suspends your metabolism, causing whatever you eat during that time to turn into fat.
However, some are completely true, like the fact that stress increases weight, but science has been unable to explain why though.
Supplements are recommended, but not a necessity
The supplements available in the market are not a necessity for staying fit. However, due to factors like unbalanced diets and adulterated foods, they are recommended to obtain the required micronutrients.
How do we start?
Starting the journey of being fit is a big step, but just starting is not enough. Consistency is key. And you don’t have to join a gym or do intensive workouts everyday. Anything that gets your heart rate up is a workout.
And you don’t even have to dedicate hours and hours of your time to stay fit. 45 mins of light workouts everyday is more than enough to stay healthy.
When do we start?
Fitness (like Digital Marketing) is not something that should be delayed. The earlier you start, the better. The results might take time, but patience and consistency is key.
