The ACT360 Experience: Nischal Shrestha, Intern

The ACT360 Experience: Nischal Shrestha, Intern

I had just completed my 4th semester and I had my summer break ahead of me. I was planning to do an internship to make something fruitful out of my vacation. I was looking for internship opportunities around social media, and that’s when I found an internship posting open at ACT360. I applied and after a few days, I got an interview call. I was extremely happy that I got selected for the position of Digital Marketing Intern.

The beginning

The very first day was a day with mixed feelings. Well, this was going to be my first day at my first job. I arrived a bit early, then I was asked to join the daily morning meeting which was called Huddle. I was made to introduce myself, then the team shared their good news and updates. I was welcomed with an open heart. My onboarding tasks were assigned and I was asked to complete some training.

The first day felt quite overwhelming; new people, new job, new place. It took me a few days to get used to the job environment and become familiar with everything at the job.

The fun environment

Before starting to work I always thought that offices had environments that were super strict, formal, and just all about work; but ACT360 was different. As I got used to working at ACT360, I got more familiar with the environment, people, and work culture. Be it the fun daily huddle, the in-office parties, or the environment that quenched my thirst for learning.

The working Sundays were not much about working. Sundays were super fun, we used to have lunch outside together with teammates, and after coming back from lunch we would play fun games together. The working sphere was not hectic at all.

The work journey

As the days went by, I was assigned various tasks. Each work assigned to me as a digital marketing intern was an opportunity to learn something new. Be it writing blogs, brainstorming ideas for future content, researching what to write or what to make, scheduling posts, or writing SEOs, all these tasks taught me something new, improved my existing skills, and built my knowledge of marketing. These tasks together acted like building blocks in learning the fundamentals of digital marketing.
I even got the chance to represent the company at career fair which was really fun.

However, these tasks were never hectic or daunting, rather they were very manageable. I was given one task at a time so I could put my 100% on it. These tasks became more enjoyable once I got the hang of them. If I ever got stuck doing a task or did not know how to do it the right way, I always had my superb mentors and supervisors who would guide me.

Bidding Goodbye

As the final day of my internship came closer, I started to feel a little sad as I did not want to leave my team of superstars in ACT360. Even though I was here for a relatively short period, I was very much bonded with my teammates and work environment.
On the last day, I was feeling sad as I was already attached to my work here. But as all good things come to end so did my journey here at ACT360. I wrote an email with a farewell message and I also expressed my gratitude to the ACT360 family.

ACT360 will always hold a special place in my heart, I will forever cherish all the wonderful memories I made here. I appreciate all their guidance and support I received during my internship journey. I gathered a lot of experience and knowledge working here which I believe would be very fruitful in building my career.

Thank you ACT360 for everything.
Keep doing awesome things.

The ACT360 Experience: Jyotirmaya Pradhan, Intern

On the 22nd of June, I had my interview scheduled here. Wanting to make a good first impression, I ended up 30 minutes ahead of time. I kept lingering around the area until it was exactly 10:30. Once I entered through the gates my only thought was figuring out where I was supposed to go.

Upon receiving help from one of the staff present I landed in the interview room. There I sat for about 5-10 minutes, wondering what all I’d say when asked to say something about myself. I had no idea of what to expect in the interview so I was prepared for the worst. When I was told to start the very next day, I guessed the interview went well.

The Beginning of The End?

The next day, my first day, I went straight upstairs to the room where my interview took place and it turns out all the team members were present there. As soon as they saw me, they warmly welcomed me. I clumsily kept my bag aside and entered the room to see the faces of my new team members for the first time.

The everyday morning huddle is something that I was found to be unfamiliar with but yet fascinated, as the huddle consisted of sharing the good news of individuals and updating the rest of the team about the progress made by different departments. On the first day, I was assigned a buddy, Sudeeksha who helped me get comfortable and settled in. She would come to check up on me and help me if I was unable to complete any tasks.

The ACT Experience

I consider the prank that they played on me to be the icebreaker even though I didn’t quite fall for it. It showed me that this company is not at all a boring bossy formal environment office. This was a safe workspace where I could talk to anybody, joke around, and make a fool of myself and yet nobody would judge me.

The thing that I admire the most about ACT360 is that we knew when to have fun and when to work hard. Despite the foolish things we might have done during our break, every single individual here is great at what they do and are always eager to teach us, interns. They want us interns to take as much as we can with us when we leave this place. Every opportunity they had they would call us upon and teach us the basics.

Few days I would be piled up with work that needed to be completed ASAP…. Meanwhile, some work could be procrastinated for days. Looking back in time, meeting deadlines was one of the major challenges I faced here. Even though my seniors helped me if I got stuck somewhere, it was kinda embarrassing for me to keep asking them for help again and again. If they had a problem with my work they would give me proper feedback on how I could improve my writing.

So….This is Goodbye

At ACT360 it is not just always work…..We played games and bonded on a deeper level on working Sundays, we even organised a cheese ball challenge for the whole team, and trust me when I say this, some of the reactions were just hilarious. You can find the video on their Facebook page :p

Even though I was here for only 2 months, I never felt left out and was included in everything. Sadly, my time here is over now and I’m definitely going to miss this place, the prank call, daily vibing through random songs, and the food we got from collecting donations.

What I did here are all nothing but precious memories and lessons I will forever cherish. Choosing to intern here was certainly one of the best decisions I ever made. I can be sure when I say that my skills have sharpened unquestionably. I hope you guys keep doing awesome things and wish you all the best.

Shailendra Raj Giri – Investment Lessons from an HR Expert

Posted on May 28, 2019Jun 24, 2019 by ACT360
Shailendra Raj Giri – Investment Lessons from an HR Expert

On May 19, we invited Shailendra Raj Giri (CEO of Merojob.com) to share his experience with us. Shailendra Ji has over 18 years experience in the field of HR. He also closely follows technology and how it can enable better HR management, helping organizations achieve a higher level of productivity.

During his interaction, he highlighted the importance of investing in yourself and how the company you work with provides one with a platform to multiply this investment several fold. He closed the session by asking everyone to be accountable to themselves.

Why invest in your career?

Shailendra ji shared how important it is to love what we do. He outlined that in order to love something, you need to be good at it. No one loves things that they aren’t good at.

This is exactly the reason, he explained, why investing in our career is necessary. If we invest in making ourselves better at what we do, we will eventually be an expert at it and will excel in it. One can invest any of the following into their career:

  1. Time
  2. Money
  3. Effort

He insisted that  if you do decide to invest in your career, you will get to whatever you dream of. Shailendra Ji recalled how he had drawn a white car in front of a house where he was standing wearing a Superman costume while he was in the fifth standard in school.

And today, he does have a house and a car which (you guessed it!) is white.

Organization as a platform

If there is one thing that is common with all of us humans, then it is work. We all work in our own ways to live our lives. You may think a beggar does not work, but he does toil in the hot sun begging for your mercy. Housewives may not dress up and go to an office, but we all know that they are some of the most hard working people we know.

What we should realize, he pointed out, is that the company provides us with a platform to define who we are as a person. We spend 1/3rd of our life (perhaps 2/3rd of our active life, the other third we spend sleeping) in our workplace. It is here that we achieve success and dream about achieving something together, much like the core purpose of ACT360 (Do Awesome Things).

He pointed out success stories of two of his colleagues who started at Merojob at the entry level and now head their own respective departments. He stressed that this was only possible due to their hard work and their motivation to utilise the platform provided to them 100%.

Self-accountability

Shailendra ji shared his story about the year when he did not feel like celebrating his birthday. This was because he could not really think of anything significant that he had done in the past year of his life. He asked us to have similar standards and to always ask ourselves, “What did you do this year?”, similar to the culture we have at ACT360 of asking “What awesome thing did you do this week / month/ quarter?”

He also shared that sometimes it is easier to be accountable if you have mentors. They can also help you when you are not hitting your targets, or even when you just need a confidante.

We would like to thank Shailendra ji for such a wonderful session. Do check out other sessions that we have had at ACT360 here.

Content Writing as a Career According to Sumina Subba

Posted on May 7, 2019Aug 5, 2019 by ACT360
Content Writing as a Career According to Sumina Subba

For most Digital Marketing professionals, Content Writing is a great place to start your journey into the world of Digital Marketing. Usually, new hires start writing content, and work on to other responsibilities such as handling social media or copywriting (for ads) and end up managing teams of Content Writers, Designers and more.

Do the youth here know that Content Writing is a valid entry point into a long term career in Digital Marketing?

Sumina Subba is a Human Rights and Cultural Diversity postgraduate from the University of Essex. Over the course of her career, she has held various human rights and communication positions. Sumina has also experienced a taste of content writing when she worked as a Content Writer in a Digital Marketing company.

We asked her for a few words about her writing job and her experiences so far.

A career change

I was looking for a change in my professional career, something to help me learn new things. One day, a friend encouraged me to apply for the position of a digital content writer for a marketing company. Thrilled and curious, I took it as a chance and it was perfect.

When I applied, I did not know what it was or what it would be like for me. I was given tasks to write blogs, posts, Q&A forums and other kinds of articles. I was introduced to various forms of content writing. At the time, I was mostly discovering and learning new things relevant to content.

While exploring the content writing job, I stumbled onto things like Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and website traffic. One interesting thing that I encountered was keywords, and how using them properly could attract target audience towards the website. This was the key element in building traffic towards the site of the company.

It was definitely a challenge at first but I could see myself improving every day. I had previously worked in a media house, this gave me some help with my writing skills. However, being a content writer introduced me to a vast range of topics, all of which challenged me to write credibly about a variety of subjects, and in a range of different styles.

I had to be particularly concerned about keywords. Eventually, I got the hang of it with a generous amount of help from my colleagues and a bit of hard work from my side.

Content writing as a career in Nepal

The concept of content writing is basically creating content for a particular website or for a specific client’s / company’s website. Content writing is a “niche” career, as you will be working within a specific circle for your target audience.

Since most of the businesses today want to increase their online presence, there is a growing demand for good content writers. Online businesses are always hungry for quality content because good content will always attract genuine customers.

To become a content writer, you need two things — a good command over English and an appetite for learning. If you think you are not proficient in written English, then practice is a must. The digital marketing industry is evolving into a competitive sector, so put more effort into improving your language skills. All it takes is the desire to take initiative and eagerness to learn more.

Moreover, most companies within the digital marketing industry have flexible working hours. You don’t have to stress over long office hours like a strict 9 – 5 regimen.

Being a creative field, everyone has realistic deadlines, plenty of information and invaluable support. I liked that it pushed me away from my comfort zone and polished my skills for a different platform.

I would encourage anyone to go for it! It is fun and learning never stops. Whether you’re an amateur writer looking to turn your writing skills into a career, or a professional writer looking for additional projects, content writing for the digital marketing industry is a great place to start. Do keep in mind though, just like any other job; you also need to be serious and committed. Always be prepared to be a team player – this is not a one-man show!

Finally, there are endless things to learn in this field – it is limitless. Above all, WORK HARD !! — because there is no substitute for diligence. You can do it!

Although I only worked as a Digital Content Writer for five months, the experience was worth it.

Sumina currently works as a Customer Service Manager for an online company. She has previously worked with Save the Children as the Media and Communication Officer for the Nepal Earthquake Response Program based in Gorkha.

In her free time, Sumina keeps herself occupied by reading books and writing poems. She’s also an avid photographer, food fanatic, and aspiring wine and tea aficionado.

Looking to start your journey in the digital marketing industry?

If you think you have what it takes to be a great content writer and a part of our family of superstars, apply now!

How to Make Coffee, the ACT360 Way!

How to Make Coffee, the ACT360 Way!

Coffee is a fuel for our work life. People can function without eating, but they seem barely able to go through the day without coffee. Further, studies have shown coffee can enhance participation among employees as well as increase positive attitude towards work .

Following the love for coffee among our team, we at ACT360 came up with the perfect way to make coffee that is sure to swoon your tastebuds. Put on your barista hats as we show you how to make the perfect coffee at the office, the ACT360 way!

The simple ingredients that you will need for the Special ACT360 coffee are:

  • Warm water (1 cup or 240ml)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons of instant coffee
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sugar (optional)
  • Milk or cream
  • Cocoa, vanilla extract (extra garnishing)

Let’s do this!

1. Put the desired amount of coffee according to your taste preference, or as mentioned by the coffee label to get the best flavour. Although the average amount of coffee to be added for a cup of 240 ml of warm water is about 1-2 teaspoons, it can be made stronger or weaker according to your taste preferences.

2. Add sugar if you want a sweet flavor to your coffee. This is optional.

3. Add milk or cream to your coffee if you don’t like your coffee black. Powdered milk is also fine.

4. Add a little warm water to the cup (just enough to dilute the mixture).

5. Stir and mix it, making a concentrated solution. If possible, use a frother or create a uniform blending motion with a spoon to create a foamy liquid.

6. Add hot water or milk to the mixture.

7. Stir it again to create extra foam.

8. Microwave it for a short time to enhance the foamy texture.

9. Garnish the coffee by sprinkling coffee powder, vanilla extract, or other spices as preferred.

10. Enjoy your coffee!

The ACT360 Experience: Sambhawi Karki, Intern

Posted on Dec 20, 2018Aug 5, 2019 by ACT360
The ACT360 Experience: Sambhawi Karki, Intern

The first time I stepped into the office of ACT360 was for my interview. Thinking back, I was intimidated and nervous, because this was my first interview. Although I was terrified inside, I tried to play it cool.

When I entered the office that day, I had imagined everyone to be working inside their personal cubicles and paying no heed to the new person entering their office. Instead, I was welcomed and seated.

As I waited, I could see everyone working, and it differed from what I had imagined an office atmosphere to be. There were transparent glass walls sectioned rooms and instead of cubicles, and everyone was sitting side by side. The environment was different, and it was definitely a new outlook for a workplace, especially in Nepal.

The interview happened while I was still in a daze of nervousness. The interviewers told me that my writing was not up to the mark, and then they asked me what I was hoping for. I had lost all hope but after I answered them, to my surprise, they still wanted to add me to their team as an intern. After hearing the news I was both ecstatic and anxious.

My first day

Then came my first day, it was still very different from what I had expected. The morning huddle, sharing good news, the prank played on the new interns were things I was taken aback by. Moreover, since it was a Sunday, there was a session for presentation. I had to participate in it too, and my role was to give an impromptu speech. I had to talk for just 3 minutes, but in front of new people I did get really nervous.

Once everyone was seated, the work began. Even then, everyone discussed work with each other. They were interacting and encouraging each other. They appreciated your opinions and ideas. Despite being an intern, I never felt like one, especially since I was taken in as a part of the team.

The orientation

Eren di gave the orientation to me and Sophiya, a fellow intern. She focused on the core values of the company, which are:

  • Family of Superstars
  • Thirst for Learning
  • Ensuring Customer Success
  • Fun & Innovative

These are the values the teams strive to follow. The team also keeps in mind the core purpose that is to “Do awesome things”. Following these values ensures that everyone is hardworking and fun at the same time.

The overall journey

I started my work in the office as an intern in mid-July, and I can undoubtedly say the work environment that this team provides will be tough to find anywhere else in Nepal.

In the past 3 and a half months, so many things have happened. We shot fun videos running around the office, had a huge potluck lunch before Dashain, did nail art between work and added ketchup in coffee (well that was just me). The last “fun” experiment resulted in me being named “Ketchup girl” in the whole office.

During my internship, my writing skills have noticeably improved. I am now more aware of my mistakes and I know where I lack as a writer. But that’s not the only place I have grown. I feel that I, myself as a person have developed.

Finally…

I came here to learn while getting great experiences, and without a doubt, I can say that this team has given me more than that. Applying at ACT360 all those months ago was one of the best decisions I ever made. Entering the office everyday feels like entering your second home. We are a family, a family of superstars.

Let’s do awesome things!

The ACT360 Experience: Sophiya Adhikari, Intern

Posted on Dec 20, 2018Aug 5, 2019 by ACT360
The ACT360 Experience: Sophiya Adhikari, Intern

Initially, all I was looking for was to install routine back into my life. As “An optimistic recent graduate” who “wants to be a productive member of the society” (as I stated in my Curriculum Vitae I made to apply to ACT) I wasn’t doing much in my gap year, and I really needed a change.

Of course, the ACT360 experience has been something much more than what I was expecting or hoping for. It now isn’t just a change I’d wanted, but a learning platform that has helped me grow into a well-rounded individual.

From the first huddle to the last Sunday learning session, the environment at ACT360 speaks volumes about the office, the people, and the work here. My experience in this blog is just one dimension of the many folds, however, it is probably also the quickest way to get a taste of what working here for more than 3 months was like.

So, this is my story.

Well, you just got PRANK’D

The first of everything is always accompanied with three main components: clammy hands, feelings of excitement of the uncertainty, and anxiety. I experienced similar symptoms as I did on the first day of my new school when I stepped into the office looking forward to the first day of work.

Believe me, I had spent hours going through the website, Facebook, and even Instagram account of ACT360. I thought I had gotten a gist of what the office was like: full of youngsters looking to make everything that they do count.

Yet, I was still taken aback. The first thing in the morning ACT conducts what they call a Daily Huddle; everyone stands in a circle facing each other, and talks about good news and what they have achieved as a team. I was already impressed, especially since my previous work experience had nothing more than your typical office interactions.

Then, I was asked to introduce myself. Everything went well; I didn’t stumble and to my relief, managed to not embarrass myself while addressing all 20 members of the family I was about to join. That is, until I did. Actually spelling out the prank would defeat its future purposes, so I won’t do it. However, it serves one best to know that everyone was in on the prank, and I, the excited newcomer, easily fell into it.

Laughing at myself did an excellent job of breaking the ice. I will always remember this incident especially since it served as proof that this company is truly what they portray themselves as: a fun, safe, and respectful space.

Are you even from ACT if you don’t know their core purpose?

All newcomers are welcomed with a presentation about ACT360. Our presenter was Eren, who was very thorough about the rules and regulations, and especially the core values. In fact, she even threw a pop quiz in it and asked the four core values. I couldn’t answer it, but I learned something very important.

The four Core values and the Core Purpose of ACT surrounds you. These are values that we keep in mind while carrying out our work here. Every Sunday sessions we go through them and ask ourselves how we as a team, achieved those values. Keeping this in mind, the next portion of my experiences is briefly divided into the four core values.

Fun and Innovative through the looking glass of Dele Alli

Everyday, members of ACT strive to do things better. As an intern, I put my hands on different works; from recording ads to even shooting videos as part of T(GIF). From my experiences, I learnt that the office culture encourages practice that can turn around any simple task into something fun and innovative.

Want to showcase our fun side to the world? Present a short skit about it. Need to exceed expectations of clients? Gather designers, writers, and management team and have a fun brainstorming session. Do we need to complete a challenge? Let’s showcase it.

This aspect of our core value I believe, does wonders in bringing forth the creative side in everyone. While working with ACT, everyday is exciting. However, I’ve also learnt that the team are as professional as they are goofy, which brings us to the next core value.

Thirst for Learning anything about everything

One thing all members of the ACT family will definitely learn from their time here is – to play UNO. And maybe a thing or two about patience when it takes half an hour to reach a unanimous decision about where to eat for the day.

Jokes aside, the ACT atmosphere is all about learning. Although I’ve only been here for a few months, I have learnt the basics of SEO, shooting videos, writing efficient blog posts, interacting with different niches of people, giving better impromptu speeches, using task managing apps and much more.

Family of Superstars and the extended family of super eaters

Another thing that really struck out about ACT was the respect everybody had for one another. Even as an intern, I know my experiences here isn’t very different from others. The people here further accentuate the office environment, for you can always count on receiving constructive criticism, help, and motivation to work from them.

This has especially been true in the case of the weekly Monday doodles. It was due to the support and positive feedback that kept me motivated to excel myself with each new work.

Whether it is making rangoli with our mascot, Rocky, or conducting potluck on the occasion of Dashain, the office is never short on activities that facilitates team building. And with monthly office sponsored lunch, birthday celebrations, as well as individual team lunches, the office is never short on eating activities either.

Starting storms to Ensure Customer Success

The final core value of ACT is ensuring customer success. Throughout my time here, I’ve come to experience that every other core values finally result in just this: customer satisfaction. The Sunday Learning sessions, group brainstorming, office lunch, and even blasting Awesome Mix Vol. 2 through the speakers; these factors contribute towards motivating everyone to give their 100%.

To infinity and Beyond… to Do Awesome Things!

All in all, working here at ACT has been nothing less than enjoyable, motivational, and phenomenal. They truly set the bar high in terms of what a working environment can, and should be like.

I’m really glad that I decided to give applying here a shot, for this unique experience has not only given me a platform to improve my social and personal skills but also, a gist of working outside my comfort space. And above all, I’m determined to constantly live by the values I’ve learnt, and so I say: Do Awesome Things!

How Not to Piss Off Your Printing Press According to Swapnil Acharya

Posted on May 30, 2017Sep 4, 2020 by ACT360
How Not to Piss Off Your Printing Press According to Swapnil Acharya

As all designers know, printing is always a headache in Nepal due to lack of standards, old equipment, and others. Who else better to speak about this than Swapnil Acharya, co-founder of Expresiv Studios, one of Nepal’s premier UI / UX services, and himself an experienced designer who has worked with newspapers, film companies, and more.

Here are some of the tips that Swapnil shared with us about designing for print, and specifically how not to piss off your printing press!

Plan ahead

Check the dimensions and layout of the medium you want to print in before you start designing.

All print designs are to be done at 300 dpi

Except for flex where 72 dpi is fine.

Content is the key to designing for print

Having the full content of the project can make a difference between good and great work. Make sure to get the full content from the client before starting your work.

Make provision for bleed, margins, paragraph gutters, and other page attributes to gaps

Bleed is the space so that printing machines can hold the paper without tampering the print area, and margin is for functional reading.

Paragraph gutters are space around the column. And don’t forget to include paragraph indentation which is the space around the paragraph, and paragraph spacing which are the spaces between paragraphs.

Flex doesn’t need bleed whereas brochures and other small designs do.

Printers don’t understand RGB

For them everything is a mixture of four colors (CMYK). And anything that is to be printed out needs to be in this color format.

The percentage of CMYK shouldn’t be high

In most cases, a color can be achieved through a mixture of 2 colors (C and M or Y and K or M or Y, etc). As a general rule, see if all components add up to less than 300% out of possible 400%.

Plates print on the paper one by one

It may be possible to reproduce a color after 4 stamps from these different plates (although this is not recommended) but if you are working with small fonts, avoid using mixture colors. Just stick to black or white or Cyan or Magenta.

Everything starts with black

When printing for text, the CMYK colors are layered on top of one another step-by-step to achieve the black text.

PNG file doesn’t support CMYK

That’s pretty straightforward 🙂

Prepare the images to be used in your design separately

Only use processed and finished images or vectors (i.e. edit images in Photoshop and finalize vectors in Illustrator) in your final paging software (e.g. InDesign) by linking them to the paging software.

DPI (Dots Per Inch)

72 dpi will be enough for web based post designs and for flex as well. Only use dpi above 72 when you want to achieve high quality/wide images.

Convert text to vectors before printing

This is a good practice and avoids errors related to missing fonts.

Stick to one printing firm

Sticking to one printing firm helps achieve consistent results so avoid printing at different places as far as possible.
